 The Microsoft Business Rules Framework

Speaker: Charles Young

The Importance of Rules
Why is rule management important to Biztalk developers?   Does the Microsoft BRE have a useful purpose.   We will look at the difference between process and policy and why BizTalk needs a rules framework.

The Microsoft Business Rules Framework
It's not just the engine!   We will look at the framework as a whole, the various component types it supports, and its support for rule repositories and distrubuted processing.

Defining and Deploying Rules
The majority of BizTalk rule scenarios use simple rule processing.   We will look at the basics of rule definition through the available tooling and demonstrate the entire rule lifecycle.  We will also discuss how to create simple domain-specific languages for rule sets using Vocabularies.

Understanding the Rules Engine
Set-based rule processing can sometimes appear complex and difficult to understand.   In fact, the model is suprisingly familiar to most developers, and very powerful.   Knowledge drives out fear.  We will look at the how the rules engine works behind the scenes and relate this to approaches all developers are familiar with.

Working with Facts
The Microsoft BRE has strong support for processing 'fact' data in various forms, including .NET types, XML documents and relational data.   We will investigate how the engine handles different fact types and the techniques developers us to map these types to the underlying model used by the engine.

Programming with the Rules API
Microsoft provides extensive programmatic support for interaction with the rules engine and framework.   We will investigate the most common programmatic tasks that developers undertake.

Integrating Rules with BizTalk Server
It's not just the Call Rules shape.   We will look at how Microsoft has integrated rules with BizTalk Server in orchestrations, through the ESB Toolkit and in RFID Server, and discuss other ways in which rules may be integrated into your applications.
